Security guards are a service which we employ to protect things such as property, assets and even people.
In today’s society Security Guards are an all important role used in the fight against crime, proving time and time again to be one of the best forms of security that money can buy.
Role of Security Guards
Traditionally security guards are uniformed and are of smart appearance. Their uniforms embroidered (or printed) with the word 'security' on them to make their role easily identifiable.
Security guards maintain a high level of visibility at all times, either directly through patrols or by watching camera operated systems such as CCTV.
The function of a security guard is to protect, observe and respond appropriately to any situations that may occur. Making notes and reporting back to their clients of any incidents.
Duties of Security Guards
The security guards motto is to "detect, deter, observe and report". Although security officers are not usually required to make arrests, they do however have the right to make citizens arrests.
In general though a Private Security Officer’s primary duty is to prevent crime and act as a clear deterrent to those who may wish to commit crime.
A good Security Organisation will have their security guards write detailed notes about any incidents or crimes that have taken place. These notes will then be written in a report which is then presented to the employer.
The reports can be used to point out weaknesses in security and highlight where improvements can be made. It is the duty of the employer to take your observations and then act on them accordingly.
Security Guard Training
A Security Officer will usually have the necessary experience needed by being trained on how to perform tasks such as citizen's arrests or how to handle and control situations.
Security guards may also know how to operate emergency equipment, be able perform First Aid and even administer CPR.
Some security officers may be required by law to participate in further training so that they may use weapons. These weapons could include batons, firearms and pepper spray.
In other situations security officers may have to pass specific courses in which Police Officers also participate to gain more experience.
Due to the increase in crime and elevated threats of terrorism, it has become ever more important for us to employ security of some sort.
Security guards at the moment continue to be one of the most successful means of protection for our property possession and even assets and will continue to be for many years.
